On June 28, 2018, DavidMaker, one of the founders of Tether (USDT), announced the issuance of the stablecoin “TrueUSD”. This project was initially founded by Bitfinex, Paxos, and Circle. In just a few years, the word “True” was removed from the Bitcoin whitepaper; but as more and more traders and investors started paying attention to USDT, it gradually became a popular term in the cryptocurrency world.
Since then, “Tether” (also known as 泰达) has become the norm in the crypto world. According to CoinMarketCap data, by the end of August, more than 20 different exchanges worldwide have listed USDT, including Binance, Huobi, OKEx, and many other trading platforms. USDT is a digital asset developed and launched by Tether that is pegged to the US dollar. Its goal is to enable instant conversion without the involvement of any banking institution.
In late 2014, Tether submitted documents to the US SEC indicating their intention to tokenize it as a security-backed token to support the market. This proposal was made to protect users from unauthorized use of third-party services. The proposal was officially released in early 2017. It continued until early December 2020, when the Tether team decided not to continue issuing USDT or adding it to their reserve for public ownership, which was finally implemented in July of this year.
